11 - Went Aqueduct to Keadby - New Junction Canal, Stainforth and Keadby Canal.

Monday 29th April 2013

08:35 departure. We were booked out of Keadby at 08:00 ish on Tuesday 30th April, a reasonable tide that would get us up to Cromwell in one go, so we thought that today would be easy...we were proved wrong! Sykehouse Lock was playing up. After the bridge was locked open the electrics locked up, nothing was possible with no fault lights showing. CaRT were called out, bods in van arrived after about 40 minutes. They went straight to control cabin, lifted os bottom gate paddle up and down, then shot off saying "there was something stuck in paddle" and that the warning siren would eventually cut out. NA suspected that this was not the case and that the limit switch was faulty on the offending paddle. Anyroad the lock now worked, we never knew if the warning siren cut out! Held up09:20 to 10:30. It was now getting bloody windy, so a real pain getting on and off the bridge moorings. It was so windy over the Don Aqueduct, a spray of water was being blown off the canal. Bramwith Junction at 12:00 and headed down the Stainforth and Keadby. when we had exited Bramwith Lock a wide beam pulled off, so we let them go through Bramwith Swing Bridge first. Held up for a while in Thorne (13:30) due to the usual problems with the stupid newish electric pedestrian swing bridge. There was a sign on the bridge  controls to operate bridge but NOT to close it, but fone mobile number and someone would be out. After the usual waggling of the silly little barriers the bridge opened , by the time the boat was passing through a bod was already at the equipment box manually shutting the bridge, so we could retrieve out BW key. Still bloody windy all afternoon, making bridge drop off / pick up "interesting", so much so NA snapped the (rather worn) centre rope (new one handy). No rail traffic on the railway, due to bank heave further along the line. Network Rail were doing repairs to the line along here prompted by being available. Vazon Railway slide bridge was swung as we operated the road bridge. MC went off to photograph the bridge, got permission from bridge keeper to take piccies line side, but disaster, battery ran out meaning no piccies! Parked up at end of moorings at 18:20. Had to do emergency spagbol, as the other pub in Keadby, the Old South Yorkshire had disappeared...literally!... shut, burnt out and demolished. The mothballed Barge Inn still survived. The only good thing about Keadby was that CaRT now had a lofty, smart new cabin, overlooking the river and lock.
