12 - Keadby to Newark - Tidal River Trent, River Trent Navigation.

NA got up early and moved the boat down to the water point for a fill up. Lovely sunny day, the wind we had yesterday had died down. NA had a chat with the bloke on the wide beam, they had only recently taken delivery, had not done the Trent before and were going to follow us up to Cromwell, as they wanted to get to Newark. NA said we would go steady timed to get us to Cromwell around HW Cromwell and they should keep up with us. We were called into the lock early around 08:00, the locky said he would let us out as soon as flood started running up. We exited at 08:20, just after Graveller Battlestone shot passed. NA set the revs to 1700, with the idea this would get us up in 7 hours, arriving around high water. Battlestone was out of sight just after the M180 Bridge, the widebeam seem to be lagging a bit by then. We always aim to pass Stockwith and Torksey within 2 and 4 hours. We had lost the widebeam by Stockwith (10:20), but could not afford to slow down seeing as we definitely wanted to arrive at Cromwell at high water, as there had been reports of there being shoals below the lock, from the past floods on the Trent. Gainsborough Arches passed at 10:50, this was around max flood, but fairly calm, compared with past passages up the tidal Trent. Torksey Cut passed at 12:20. We passed Graveller Heather Rose H at Dunham, it must have gone up yesterday afternoon, as we had seen it moored up, fully laden at Whitley Lock two days ago. We arrived at Cromwell at 15:30, exactly 7 hours after departure from Keadby, having not touched the throttle once. The level had gone down about 4 inches by the time we entered the lock. A week or so after Cromwell Lock was shut as another boat had run aground below and Land and Water had been contracted to remove the shoals below the lock. Slow trundle up the Trent, Nether Newark Lock was worked for us (ISTR that it had to be as the electrics were faulty) and we moored up on Newark Visitor Mooring pontoon, in the company of one other boat, at 17:05. That evening was a wander around town, predictably ending up at 'Spoons Steak Night- The Sir John Arderne
