The Tuesday Night Club on Tour
Tour 2013
9 - Slaithwaite to Shepley Bridge - Huddersfield Narrow Canal, Huddersfield Broad Canal, Calder and Hebble.
Saturday 27th April 2013
Pushed off at 08:00, really rather easy passage down to Huddersfield, especially as we we letting a lock full of water down and not filling next lock until Earnest nearly upon it. The bank side was avoided, on longer none walkable pounds, the lock crew just got off the bow at next lock mouth and on the stern off the wing walls. The notorious shallow pound above Ramsden Highest Lock No 14E was even OK at tick over, this had been recently dredged out, but inflowing stream had already deposited silt between its entrance and the side weir above Ramsden Highest Lock No 14E. Just before Golcar Aqueduct NA spotted a large large yellow plastic duck, so with a bit of difficulty, it was retrieved and became our mascot for the rest of the Tour. The was slight confusion below Isis Lock No 9E, as a CaRT bod was letting water down for another up bound narrowboat that was stuck in the pound below Fountain Lock No 7E. When we got to this pound it was down a fair bit, but no problems at tick over. It was our first passage through the new, new Sellars Lock No 3E, which has been yet again repositioned due to the flooding of Sellars Tunnel and removal of roof. A bit of an economy measure here, a rather daft narrow bit of canal past one of the new Huddersfield University buildings, where some nice moorings could have been created. Passed through Apsley Basin at 12:40. As predicted no 60ft visitor moorings, apart from the two overnight ones in the basin, out side the Apsley pub, (discretionary with Apsley Basin Marina, as they block the exit of permanent moorings in the basin.) After a weed hatch free trip over the HNC, we caught a sari on the prop while going through the sharp bend (at tick over!) at Leeds Road Bridge No 13. A bit of activity on the Broad, a couple of keen lad filled Shire Cruisers hire boats coming up. Much CaRT weir work going on at Cooper Bridge Weir, we passed onto the Calder and Hebble at 15:10. Continued ambling down the Calder and Hebble, arriving at the Shepley Bridge visitor moorings at 16:25 That night it was an uninspiring meal and pint in the packed out Ship Inn. Not much choice of nearby pubs, The Swan had shut.
