13 - New Ross to Carlow - Tidal River Barrow and River Barrow Navigation.
Tuesday 3rd July 2007
It was an early tide up to St Mullins (06:45) and you guessed it, it was exactly a two hour cruise. Timing was yet again perfect, we arrived at the top of the tide, just as a GRP cruiser was locking out, to go down to New Ross. As there had been quite a lot of rain it was quite hairy on the Barrow, some sections on the outside of bends, boatstream side were pretty fast flowing. We decided that conditions would probably get worse, as yet more rain was forecast, so we had a long day and got all the way to Carlow, arriving at 20:45. The logic in this was that the faster flowing sections of the river were below Carlow. On the way up, we spotted only one other moving boat, Peter Acheson off the IWAI newslist in his Haines cruiser, this was just below Goresbridge.
