Tours 2000, BCN, Severn Estuary, K&A and River Wey

36 - Friday 4th August - Newark Priory Lock to Guildford. River Wey.

Weather bit cloudy at start, but then warm and sunny.

Yet another late start from Newark lock, at 9.40. At least the weather was OK today, back to shorts! The Wey has been much prettier than I remember it, probably because it is sunny summer day and not a cold rainy April, as we last experienced it. We stopped for water at Stoke Lock (12.45 to 13.45). This was a drawn out affair as it was a slow tap and every one had showers while it was filling. No one passed us in this time. Wendy found a leaflet dispenser, with a little map guide of the town, at least we knew where the cinema was now! We also managed lunch, but the smell of the Sewage works nearby nearly put us off it! Dapdune Wharf (NT) was marked not available out of opening hours and there were two work boats moored on it! The run into Guildford has been somewhat improved, but it is not until Walnut Footbridge that the town opens out onto the water front. We stopped at the 24 hour visitor moorings, just before Onslow Bridge, so that Neil could check out if there were any new visitor moorings that he fancied in the town. There were not and the first ones he did fancy were the Meadow ones, round the corner from the Guildford Boathouse. This was where we moored in 1995. Millmead Lock was looking resplendent after it's May 2000 rebuild, only the gates seemed original, and these looked like they had new balance beams. Off we went again and moored up, at the chosen spot, on the towpath side (15.25). Another two hire boats subsequently joined us. That evening we went to see Chicken Run, the Nick Parks (Wallace and Grommet man) full length film, a spoof on the Great Escape. After this we headed to Pizza Express for an excellent pizza.
