Tours 2000, BCN, Severn Estuary, K&A and River Wey

28 - Thursday 27th July - Sells Green to Devizes. Kennet and Avon Canal.

Weather hot and sticky all day, the predicted storm did not materialise.

We started off late at 10.00. The first boat to go past was Town class motor Elstree. Not wishing to share with this we waited for the other gaggle of boats to go past. We eventually started up the 29 at 10.30 in the company of Foxtrot, a Foxhangers hire boat. There crew was fairly extensive and together and we had a pleasant trip up. Linda steered all the way, we were going to split up the steering, but I think she fancied the very competent steerer! When it came to the main part of the flight the two boats came out and in together in a very controlled fashion. SCSI the parrot was in fine talking mode, her cage being in the front cockpit. She did not squeak out "slow down!" though. We passed all but one of the boats coming down in the first few locks. There was plenty of water, with much evidence of side pound repairs, new wash walls and a new by weir system.
The tow path had been mostly "souped up" so the masses of pushbikes could zoom up and down it. Peter went ahead with the two young boat babes from Foxtrot for the second half of the flight. The locks were suddenly all ready for us as he showed off his lock wheeling technique! Lunch was on the move, finished of by the endless supply of Sheila Goodland's excellent fruit cake! Foxtrot stopped and winded by the pub below lock 48. We were then on our own following the wide Bruce trust trip boat for the last few locks. At 15.15 we stopped for the night just above the top lock in the dreadful as ever visitor moorings. We managed to get the bow in and stay afloat, but it was still a gang plank job to the gas locker. We went to  the Queens Head Mole Brewery pub at the bottom of Dunkirk Hill. Beer excellent and food not bad either. Watched TV for first time in 4 weeks. BBC West local news program had thingy on Bristol docks. We watched them make most of it when last there, but Earnest did not feature in it!

We got back to the boat just started as it started raining, so Neil had to put all the glass hoppers back, shut hatches and put cratch down, at least this will cool it down a bit.
