The Tuesday Night Club on Tour
Tours 2000, BCN, Severn Estuary, K&A and River Wey
17 - Sunday 16th July - Stratford upon Avon to Evesham. Warwickshire Avon.
Weather, improving, could it be the estuary trip will be
on?
We left Stratford-upon-Avon river moorings at 7.15. No traffic until we shared IWA Cadbury lock with "Albert"
(9.20). We passed Bidford-upon
-Avon at 10.35. We lost Albert
at George Billington Lock as they filled up with water. Arrived at Evesham lock at
13.05 just as lock keeper was closing for lunch, but we were not worried as we were in the middle of clothes washing and could not turn off the
engine in his lock. Soon after Albert arrived, they were not aware the keepered lock closed for lunch (control point between Upper and Lower Avon).
Andrew G went to do a spot of shopping in the town. We went into the lock at 13.50 and
soon arrived at Evesham river moorings below Workman Bridge.
John Rushbrook was leaving that afternoon, so we had a pint in the bar of the Evesham Hotel, one of John's favourite haunts.
The proprietor is a total nutter. He takes to wearing Denis the Menace ties,
will not stock French wine and gets involved in drag Queen nights. He also
insults his guests, a bit of a Fawlty Towers establishment, but very
popular. John Rushbrook left at 16.30. All afternoon Keith Chegwin's voice was booming out from the
park opposite, as he was comparing an Its a knockout roadshow thingy. Fortunately by
the time Neil and Andrew had got so sick of him and were contemplating assassinating him, it all stopped.
The whole lot was packed up within the hour.
Ian and Sophie arrived at 19.05, along with Sid, another of Sophie's friends. Ian had left his car at Sid's and
they were given a lift over. We had a brief drink with Sid in the Weatherspoon's
pub in the centre of town. That night we ate at Rily's Indian, which was OK, but not as good as the Indian last night. One thing they specialised in
was EXTRA LARGE nan breads, we could not eat all of the smaller LARGE one that arrived,
carried by two waiter's! We retired fairly early as we anticipated an
early start tomorrow, as we wanted to get to Gloucester at a reasonable
time.

Colin P Witter Lock (Stratford). The girder supports were put in as the lock was originally going to be deeper, thus dispensing with the next lock down stream (Weir Brake). Since we first went through here in the 1970's the sheet piled sides have been concreted in. Upper Avon. (Warwickshire Avon.) |
