Tour 2010
12 - Compiegne to Liez, River Oise, Canal Lateral a L'Oise, St Quentin Canal.
Tuesday 8th June 2010
09:00 departure from Compiègne. 12:15 we passed the junction with the Nord and carried on up the Canal Lateral a L'Oise. From here on it was much quieter. The Pont L'Eveque lock keeper at the paralleled Freycinet sized locks, asked where we were headed, on of our rare contacts with the efficient VNF staff. it was up this section where we were nearly on the receiving end of the only bit of bad commercial boating. A pusher tug, decided to take up the tow of an empty oil pan, at speed and "on the hoof" and nearly mowed us down. We shot wrong side to get out of his way, as a crew member struggled to get the cables tight and the barge under control. At Abbécourt, the junction with the Canal de L'Oise a Aisne was passed by at 14:45. At 15:45 we passed through Chauny, a pleasant looking little town with new secure visitor moorings. From here on there is an end on junction with the Canal du St Quentin and we were surprised to find the locks now automatic, with radar detection. During opening hours the locks give a red light, until, you pass a detector, you then get a red/green. The lock then turns round and you get a green, with gates open, you can now enter the chamber. Once you are settled in the chamber, there are two lever rods, set into the wall of the chamber. The red is emergency stop (pull down) and blue (push up) is to set the lock in motion, to fill or empty. Upon leaving the lock another radar detector shuts the gates. We found the St Quentin automatic locks fairly quick. Things could be speeded up by setting the lock as you enter, then getting bow rope out, while the gates were shutting and paddles closing. The gates always move with the paddles up, to release some of the pressure against the gate. 17:00 we turned left up the main line of the Canal de St Quentin, straight on, at La Fere, is another end on junction with the Canal de la Sambre a L'Oise. We managed to get up to below Lock No28 Voyaux, where were were stopped at 18:15 by the lock switched out. (no red).
