28 - Boyle to Ballyconnell - River Boyle, Lough key, Shannon Navigation and Shannon Erne Waterway.

Wednesday 18th July 2007

A rather dull overcast start to the day, we left at 08:35, just as a rain cloud started to slowly edge its way eastwards, amazingly we stayed dry as we managed to out run the rain! As there was a fair flow on the River Boyle we phoned ahead to check if the waiting pontoon for Clarendon Lock was free, it was, so we proceeded and arrived at 09:30. A quick descent in the lock, which we exited at 09:45. We hit the Shannon at 10:50 and headed back northwards, after having gone the other (east) way round Inishatirra Island. Nothing much to report on the way back up the Shannon and over the Shannon - Erne Waterway, we passed Leitrim at 11:35, Keshcarrigan at 14:55, Riversdale at 17:50, arriving at Ballyconnell at 20:35.
This was our first stop at Ballyconnell, we could have got on the short cruiser pontoons, but checked with the binoculars that there was nothing on the town wharf, just below the bridge. With a fair flow on this Woodford River section of the SEW, we checked our speed and went with the current onto the wharf, Neil jumping off with the centre line and doing a rope stop. That night we did not have far to walk for a nice meal at the Casa Tivoli Italian restaurant, as it was just by the bridge.
