Irish Summer Tour 2007
2 - Keshcarrigan to Tarmonbarry - Shannon Erne Waterway and Shannon Navigation.
Friday 22nd June 2007
We started off at 08:00, as we knew it was around an hours trundle across the summit, through Lough Scur and the rock cuttings to Kilclare Upper Lock, the western summit lock. The power for the Shannon - Erne Waterway card reader locks comes on round 09:00 and we had a 15 minute wait. Uneventful passage down the locks, we met one hire cruiser and one private cruiser coming up. 11:20 saw us pass Leitrim, there being some room on the visitor moorings. Boyle River Junction was passed 12:05 and Carrick - On - Shannon was passed at 12:25.
Event free trip down to Albert Lock, where we arrived behind a waiting hire cruiser at 13:55, just at the end of lockies lunch hour. We were held up at Albert Lock, while the hapless husband and wife crew (just picked up the Carrickcraft
hire boat) bashed the boat backwards and forwards across the cut. After giving up and damaging
something (it would now "not steer"), Neil rescued them and assisted in tying up the boat, pointing the wrong way!
We passed out of Albert Lock assisted by the young lady locky (Mrs Bourke's daughter?) who said this kind of thing goes on all the time with the hire boats!
We had booked Keenans pub at Tarmonbarry, for food and arrived in plenty of time at 17:55. As we did not want to be held up by locking times, so we moored below the lock. This was not without difficulty as there were some serious pontoons moored up below the lock. We heard these are associated with the proposed hydro dam project at Tarmonbarry Weir. A rather large
Roughty Toughty GRP cruiser kindly moved up on the moorings, so we just fitted on. Martin Clark had a wander an subsequently found that there are some floating pontoons in the cut leading to the new marina housing
development, but these are all private. As usual there was a good buzz in Keenans, a nice steak...and well...a cold pint of Guinness.
