Irish Summer Tour 2007
16 - Cavemount to Meelick - Grand Canal and River Shannon Navigation.
Friday 6th July 2007
An 06:55 start from the lift bridge. We had a shopping stop at Daingean 08:00 to 09:00, with yet another attempt using the pathetic water tap. We passed through Tullamore at 12:00, there were a load of kids milling around Lock No 28, but they were friendly enough, so Neil put them to work!
We hit the Shannon at 20:30, with the idea that we would get to Meelick Lock, ready for first locking through, the next morning. Neil lost his rag with a load of confused hire boaters at Banagher (20:30), who came through the bridge, could not find a spot in the basin, then milled around in front of the Navigation arch. Choice sayings like "Do you know what 20 tons of steel that has right of way, would do do that plastic boat?!"
At 21:00 we glid down Meelick Lock cut, hoping to find a mooring on the floating pontoons. Fortunately we were in luck and we were soon joined by some English on a Shannon Castle Lines hire boat. Getting
desperate for food, Neil had broken out the "emergency" Fray Bentos tinned pies.
We have over-nighted on the new pontoon above Meelick (Victoria) Lock and have
just come forward for locking down. Shannon Navigation.
