11 - Carrick - On - Suir to Inistioge - Tidal Rivers Suir, Barrow and Nore.
Sunday 1st July 2007
Again, with John Chapman's "luck" the tides were perfectly timed for best daylight hours use. We left Carrick - On - Suir on the top of the tide (08:35), so as to have plenty of water at the Carrick end and around Fiddown. We had a lazy amble down the Suir, the wind was less that day, so there was no problem at the Long Reach. We passed through Waterford at 11:35. On the way back we took the more direct Queens Channel round Little Island. Even though we went at tick over we were still early at Cheekpoint (12:30), so started up the Barrow when it was still in ebb. As the ebbing waters of the Barrow and Suir met, just before the Barrow Bridge there was a strange, rough rippley section,
stretching right downstream.
The ebb was not that strong and we made steady progress up the Barrow, being sods law, it was a nice bright day, perfect for photography from the bank. We intended to go up the Barrow beyond New Ross that night and follow the top of the tide all the way up the Nore to Inistioge. To achieve this we had to hang around for a few hours in New Ross. As the New Ross Boat Club pontoon was free, John
Dimond gave us permission to wait there, which we did from 15:10 to 18:30. As the Barrow was in maximum flood at our arrival, we went through the bridge, went upstream passed the pontoon and moored boats, then picked out way back slowly against the current.
It was a superb evening cruise up the Nore, the weather held and we trickled up on the last of the flood. The upper section of the tidal River Nore is
superb, wonderful clean forest smells from the richly forested banks of the bendy river. At the "Red House", is the end of the main river that does not dry out at low water. This house is very obvious, as it is the only house up this end, it now has red window frames and is also for sale!
Beyond here the basic navigation channel is to round the islands, keeping close to the east bank. This
thickly wooded section has a couple waterside houses, with the high tide just lapping onto the lawn. Finally the tiny quay at Inistioge came into view. We spun round using the force of the fresh coming down from the river and plonked ourselves on the centre of the empty quay.
It was perfect timing as we moored up exactly at high water. The river was level with the top of the stone quay and it soon began to go down. We knew that this was a drying out berth, but that the bottom was flat gravel. Neil prodded around with the boat hook, all was well and we
adjusted the length of the ropes, so as we bottomed we would be tight against the quay side. Neil had got the food going on the way up, so we soon sat down to a blow out curry...or was it a spag bol?! That evening we wandered up into the village and went to O'Donnells Bar...truly one of TNC's wonderful moments. Before we went to bed the boat had bottomed and the level gone down, so Neil could not resist a tiny bout of through the weed hatch,
propeller fettling.
