Tour 2007
April 2007
7 - Dublin, Ringsend Basin (inc Grand Canal Basin) to Portobello - Grand Canal Circular Line.
Friday 6th April 2007
After a morning doing the Luas tram system, we pushed off at 15:15. First we decided to do a tour of the Grand Canal Basin. The old lift bridge that went over the entrance between the two dock was in the process of being replaced by a fixed bridge, but navigation was still possible. We skirted the large Grand Canal Dock, somewhat sterile, there only being a few boats in
the far corner. Two "Duck" amphibious vehicles were also doing the tour at the same time.
At 15:40 we passed out of Ringsend Basin and started up the Circular Line locks on our on. Stephen, the locky had given us a list of how he wanted the locks left, 1,4 and 6 empty and 2,3, 5 and 7 full. With Neil and Martin staying off and lock wheeling we got to Portobello at 17:00. On passing out of Lock No 7 we noticed that presumably yobs had broken off one side of the outer hand rail. We left it hanging on the centre closure chains, as
if left out it would probably have ended up in the lock chamber.
The trip boat was out moving VERY slowly, we believe this was the only place you could get a drink on this Good Friday! We moored up on the visitor mooring pontoon, there were a lot of people about, sitting on the pontoon and chilling out. Just
in case there was a problem Neil used the trusty centre eye, chain and padlock method to moor the boat. That night we stayed in (no where to drink!) and got a Chinese takeaway from just down Lower Rathmines Street.
