Tour 2007
April 2007
11 - Shannon Bridge to Tarmonbarry - Shannon Navigation inc Lough Ree.
Tuesday 10th April 2007
We departed Shannon Bridge at 07:15, Clonmacnois was passed at 08:30 and we arrived below
Athlone Lock at 10:30. What with getting our Shannon Navigation pack and a rather dopey locky we got out at 11:20. It was a 3hour 40mins passage up Lough Ree in cold overcast conditions, it blew up a bit at the end and by the time we were approaching Lanesborough Bridge, we were really surfing in, with the wind right behind us. The only things of note out on Lough
Ree was that a hire cruiser with tender cut right across in front of us, with
Earnest missing their tender, by a matter of inches. We also spotted a wide-beam narrowboat style Riversdale Barge...that was not meant to be out on Lough Ree!
We started to take it a bit easier, arriving above Tarmonbarry Lock at 16:50. After a water fill up we moored up on the floating pontoon, the only other boat soon left leaving us alone on the moorings. That evening we wandered off to Clondara to look at Richmond Harbour and the locks, then repaired to
Keenan's Bar for a nice meal and a pint.
