19 - Sowerby Bridge to Todmorden - Rochdale Canal.

Monday 15th July 2002

We left at 07:30 going up the first two locks, so as to arrive for the opening of the Tuel Lane Deep Lock at 08:00. Howard the old Rochdale Canal Trust locky was still in residence, having been re-employed by BW when they took over the running of the Rochdale Canal (as were most of the other Trust employees). We were signalled to come through the tunnel with the normal series of whistles; Frogmoore and Earnest were told to squeeze up into the 57ft 6ins section of the lock. After a good talk with Howard, we were on our way at 08:25.
Uneventful trip up to Hebden Bridge, where we moored up on the water point at 11:10. We were getting old hands going up and down this section, other than this time we were not coming back! 
John and Pat went shopping and after having pulled back from the water point we shoved off at 14:00.
We passed through Lobb Mill Lock at 16:40. which had the normal array of youngsters in canoes darting about below the lock. We moored in Todmorden in Martin Clark's approved place, a fair way below Lock No19. That evening we all ate out at the Railway Hotel - by the station, a venue found by Peter Arlidge and Chris, when they went walkabout. OK meal and pint, not the best venue, but we had to find somewhere that took youngsters.

It is a shame that their excellent prototypical Rochdale gates and paddle gear could not be used on the final BW fling of the restoration, instead of the "Northwich" style gates and gear.
