25 - Ely to Downham Market - Ely Ouse and Relief Channel.
Sunday 22nd July 2001
Daughter Wendy did fry up breaky. At 09.05 we thought about pushing the boat across
the river to Lovey's Marine for some diesel. We say goodbye to the crew of nb Kingfisher.
A cruiser beat us to the diesel point, but it was soon gone. Yet another half a tank full - 121
litres. We then set of up steam to show the newcomers the sights of Ely, then
wind upstream of by-pass bridge.
We set of back downstream at 09.25. We stopped at Ten Mile Bank
- Hilgay Bridge at 12.30 - 12.40 for a dog watering stop......unfortunately, but
probably fortunately the “Windmill” pub was boarded up and soon will be
derelict - it was up for sale by auction. We got to Denver at 13.10 and went straight
into the new
Cut Off Channel Lock. It was straight through, no queues and we got out at 13.30.
Soon we were bombing
down the Great Ouse Cut Off Channel to Wiggenhall Bridge (present end as water-ski
club below) We got to the end at 15.00, then raced back to Magdalene Road Bridge to drop
John Rushbrook off, for a train to Ely. John got the train with minutes to spare.
Lockings at Denver would be around 11.30 the next day.
We decided to spend the night on
Downham Market Pontoon as the “Jenyns Arms” at Denver does not do food on Sunday
evening. Only one small cruiser was on the pontoon and we tied up at16.35.
The nice pontoon
tempts Neil to rub down scratches and touch up gunwales. He also grinds of the Salter’s Lode gunwale dent and fills (from last remaining Akers tub of metalfiller!) All goes well
it was primed and touched up before Neil had to leg it off after rather keen food hunting crew.
JC then arrived in Frogmoore - they had to breast up against the wet
paint - fortunately the gentle arrival was courtesy of Pat
Chapman.........we also finally got to meet the famous “Aunty Joan”
Eventually Neil met up with the “B” Team in the “Crown Hotel”. Very
good pub three course meal for £9 per head. Very old coaching
inn...........amusing old toilets.
