12 - Dog In A Doublet to Outwell - River Nene and Middle Level, inc Stanground Water, Kings Dyke, Whittlesey Dyke, River Nene Old Course and Well Creek.
Monday 9th July 2001
Neil got up around 06.30 and wandered around the Dog-In-A-Doublet Sluice Complex
taking pictures / video, also of the pub itself and the newly replaced road
bridge. Mick appeared at 07.30 and we were off at 07.40, without any problems -
Ah the wonders of what was to become the VERY used Gold Licence!
A was then a hack up to
Peterborough and then a left turn under the Railway bridge into Stanground Water
and the start of the Middle Level at Stanground (08.45) Between 08.50 and 09.40
we stopped at Peterborough Boat Centre for diesel and finally a
JC replacement of gas cylinder he borrowed from Neil. The young narrowboat fitter came
down and had a good nose around Earnest.
It was a slow process through the 12ft wide Stanground Lock as we had to go
singularly. Much more housing development noticed to the north bank of King's
Dyke at Stanground. Captain Beeky astounded himself and
managed a turn at the infamous sharp Briggate bend in Whittlesey - without
touching the sides.
JC got somewhat confused at the newly extended Ashline Lock
and tried to drain the reach above. The little derelict Lock Cottage had also
been refurbished. Uneventful trip straight though to March. We saw The Petts
narrowboat in Fox Marina - this is the one Andrew Hooke was fitting when Neil
went up to R&D to discuss Earnest. We stopped on the Visitor Moorings (15.30
to 16.40), just beyond the Town Bridge, for a small shopping expedition.
Coming
out of March Dave Shorto - nb Eagle No5 (who was going to come back across the
Wash and meet us up the Welland, but could not get a crew) gave Neil a ring.
Neil stood on the roof and when an approaching narrowboat was spotted, Dave said
is that you in a white Cutweb T shirt, on top of your boat!!!??? We stopped and
coupled bow to bow for a good salty chat........until disturbed by an
approaching Fox Hire Boat.
It then started to seriously rain, which lasted all
day. The famous Norton family locky crew (who now own and originally saved the
lock from being filled in and culverted) came out at Marmont Priory Lock, in the
pouring rain and sped us on our way.
Above here and into Upwell and Outwell it
became very shallow, but at least the weed had been pre pulverised by boat
passages. After a few aborted stops and phone around for a pubs that were doing
food we eventually dropped Ian Clarke off at the “Wisbech Canal” (long
filled in) moorings to take a Taxi to pick up his car, that had been abandoned
in Surfleet Seas End.
We ended up in the Crown Lodge Hotel (21.10), which was on
the outskirts of Outwell. Still pouring with rain. JC had gone ahead and had
checked it out. It did food until 22.00, which meant that Ian C could get
something to eat when he returned. The Crown Lodge was a strange place, it had
been converted from a car showroom / petrol station! But OK food / Green King
ales and not too expensive. Ian eventually arrived at 21.45, just as we were
finishing our starters. After the main course Neil nearly dozed off, sitting
up..........Oh!.......the strain of “Command”!!!
