Canal Restoration
The Montgomery Canal And Newport Branch Of The Shropshire Union Canal Restoration Pages
These images are scanned from some of Neil Arlidge's Instamatic snaps from the first two non old-dears canal holidays.
The Newport Branch ones are taken having walked past the top lock at Norbury Junction (Shropshire Union hire base dry dock) and the removed embankment (this looked recent) over a small stream. The top gates had been removed and a small concrete dam placed at the head of the lock to hold back some water. To our eyes then it all looked so restorable! We have never been back to see the increasing decay.
The 1972 Frankton Pictures of the Montgomery Canal show the locks in their "raw" state before the long restoration started. The little iron bridge over the staircase locks had been painted up along with some of the ends of the balance beams. Other Frankton pictures over the years. It was to be some 26 years before we finally sailed down these!
