15 - Monasterevin to Cavemount - Grand Canal Barrow and Shannon Lines.

Thursday 5th July 2007

Joe More the lock keeper (lock No 25 is now kept locked up overnight) was about at 09:00 and soon got us through his lock and the Monasterevin lift bridge. 14:15 saw us reach the New Barrow Line. So another new bit of canal, what can we say, it is weedy, but not as bad as the Old Barrow Line. Approaching Lowtown there are many moored boats, some in rather a state, others sunk!
At the junction with the Shannon Line we reversed back up to the diesel point at Lowtown Marine. Neil went into the yard and found the owner, the rather famous (in these parts) Caroline Few. The Few's came over many years ago from England, (after doing much inland boating) and started Lowtown Marine, the ONLY working boat yard on the Shannon and Dublin Lines of the Grand Canal. Neil had a good moan about British Waterways and Caroline had a good moan about Waterways Ireland! We were apparently known in these parts as "The Tuesday Club":-)
We set off at 15:25, that afternoon the weather worsened, with rather lot of rain and strong winds, which made the bog and embanked sections rather interesting. We still had a good days boating, egged on by John Chapman, determined he would get down to Limerick, before he had to leave. We tied up below the Bord Na Mona Cavemount Lift bridge at 21:15 to a maxi spag bol prepared by Neil, while John was getting soaked outside!
