12 - Inistioge to New Ross - Tidal Rivers Nore and Barrow.
Monday 2nd July 2007
It is possible to go from Inistioge to St Mullin's (both the head of the tideway) in a day, but you have to get it right, or you could run out of water getting into St Mullin's. Anyway we had grown to like New Ross, it is still a proper little seaport, with out pretensions. We left at 08:45, a little before high water. Again another 2 hour amble down to New Ross. John
Dimond had given us permission to over night on the New Ross Boat Club pontoon.
The river was in maximum ebb when we arrived at New Ross, so to avoid a nasty
manoeuvre in the short distance between the bridge and the pontoon, we went through the bridge, winded, stemmed the tide and gently went back through the bridge and landed on the pontoon. That afternoon we
assisted some local lads who had bow hauled their broken speed boat down the Barrow! They had to pull it round Earnest and the pontoon to get it to the slipway, the other side. Because we had a free afternoon, John Chapman went "walkabout" visiting Waterford, Limerick Junction and some of the coast, all by public transport.
