41 - Norton Canes to Daw End, including trip up to Anglesey Basin, Cannock Extension Canal, Wyrley and Essington Canal, Anglesey Branch and Daw End Branch.

Saturday 10th August 2002.

We shoved off at 10:30, up to Canal Transport Services dock to wind in the entrance, it was then back off down to Pelsall Junction, where at 12:10 we turned left and carried on along the Wyrley and Essington Canal. At Brownhills we pulled over to the silted up Tesco moorings and managed to get into the bank.
From 13:00 to 13:50 there was a Tesco shopping stop, then the short hop up to Catshill Junction. Here at 14:00 we carried straight on up the Wyrley and Essington canal. Once up to the abandoned Ogley Junction, where the canal used to carry onto the Coventry Canal at Litchfield, we turned sharp left up the Anglesey Branch, it was easy to see what direction was considered the main line!
After winding at the end of Anglesey Basin we moored up on the old coal wharves from 14:50 to 15:25. After this break we started back, under the mess of bridge construction for the M6 Toll Road. Back at Catshill Junction at 16:15, then left down the Daw End Branch. Destination that night was the Manor Arms at Daw End, arrival at 18:50. Normal good simple well cooked pub grub and a nice pint of Bank's in this rather special old pub - where the snug bar had no counter - the pumps etc are all on one wall.
