The 1971 Canal Holiday

The Maurice Arlidge log just about says it all. We started from Mermaid Hire Cruisers at Wightwick, just below Wolverhampton on the Staffs and Worcs. Shropshire Union and Llangollen Canals and back in a week. Of course, not a lot of traffic then! Boat was fibreglass 40 ftish Dawncraft - Dawn Star. It is amazing to think how many people were packed in this little boat, (by today's standards.)

Maurice Arlidge's (Neil's Dad) log. This just about charts the course of our week out. You can see where Neil got his idea of a cruising day from (14¼ hours!)

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. We were to turn at the other end (Boo Hoo!) and go back. Next year Neil, Andy Lee and Ian returned on their own to get to the pump house beyond Llangollen! Llangollen Canal.

Ian Scott, Steve Roberts and Neil Arlidge, aged 16! We are moored at Ellesmere and have just been in swimming in Blake Mere. Llangollen Canal.

Coming back down Audlem Flight. We have just passed first generation "buffodil" BWB hire boat - half an old working boat. Wot's all this argy bargey poling? Shropshire Union Canal.

Coming back down Audlem Flight. Neil has just found this windlass. He still has it in chromed finish! Note that we all are very good and wearing boating shoes! Shropshire Union Canal.

Eileen (Neil's Mum), Doreen and Marion. Penny the toothless poodle barks at Les Scott. Notice the "correct" un manicured towpath! Well some of us wore boating shoes! Coming back down Audlem Flight. Shropshire Union Canal.

Ian leaping off the boat for a quid! Shropshire Union Canal.

Ian gets back on while boat still moving! Shropshire Union Canal.

Our mooring at Norbury. Butty Iona was a horse drawn trip boat here at this time, now at Godalming. Note the lack of permanent moorings and BW signage here! Shropshire Union Canal.

One of the cuttings. Shropshire Union Canal.

Eileen, Doreen and Maurice. Note the first generation BWB guide! Anglo Welsh Harborough boat still looks familiar. Shropshire Union Canal.

The ladies caught stuffing their faces! Shropshire Union Canal.

The happy crew Eileen, Marion, Steve Roberts, Doreen, Ian, Neil (steering) and Maurice. Neil is at the Sainsbury's lager again. I can't begin to remember how we all fitted in! Shropshire Union Canal.
